Global Ministries Program Areas

The General Board of Global Ministries is the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church, its annual conferences, missionary conferences, and local congregations.

Organization of This Agency

Global Ministries is organized into eight program areas, the Women's Division, and General Administration.

Community & Institutional Ministries

The Community and Institutional Ministries unit of the General Board of Global Ministries facilitates, resources, and supports outreach to meet human needs, with special emphasis on ministries with women, children, youth, families, and older adults.

The Evangelization and Church Growth program area facilitates the proclamation and witness to the saving grace of Jesus Christ through word, deed, and sacrament. It helps to establish faith communities or new churches and strengthens existing congregations.

General Administration, which includes the office of the general secretary, is responsible for the oversight of the entire agency.

Mission Contexts & Relationships

The Mission Contexts and Relationships program area is concerned with the contexts in which mission takes place today. These contexts may be local, global, geographical, cultural, ethnic, international, denominational, ecumenical, or any combination of these possibilities.

Mission Education

The Mission Education program area has two primary goals: to develop a mission education philosophy for the General Board of Global Ministries that is rooted in a biblical and theological understanding of Christian global mission and to undergird the total program of the board through mission education.

Mission Personnel

The Mission Personnel program area recruits, selects, trains, assigns, supervises, and supports mission personnel for short-term and long-term service. It also identifies opportunities for service.

The Mission Volunteers program area provides support and resources for all United Methodist global mission volunteer programs, including the United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) program.

United Methodist Committee on Relief

UMCOR is the global humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church, working in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the United States. It mission is to alleviate human suffering - whether caused by war, conflict or natural disaster - with open minds and hearts to all people.

Women's Division

The Women’s Division is actively engaged in fulfilling the mission of Christ and the church and in interpreting the purpose of United Methodist Women (UMW). The division advocates for the oppressed and dispossessed, with special attention to the needs of women and children.
